The Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service, Dakota AIDS Education and Training Center, Denver STD/HIV Prevention Training Center, and the Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairmen Health Board/Northern Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center are sponsoring the conference.

Program Description
This conference will carry on the tradition of providing the most current information on implementing effective prevention and intervention programs targeted at Aberdeen Area's top health priorities including Reproductive Health, STD, and HIV/AIDS services in your clinics and communities. Participants will discuss effective programs and identify opportunities for enhancing existing programs or implementing new programs.

Conference Goal
To increase the knowledge of Aberdeen Area health care providers, community members and Tribal Directors regarding effective preventative interventions to address health promotion, disease prevention, reproductive health care, and STD/HIV prevention for Native Americans.
Major topic areas to be discussed and demonstrated this year include but are not limited to:

Conference Objectives and skills to be gained
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to identify and utilize effective strategies and preventative interventions that target Aberdeen Area's top health priorities including reproductive health, STDs, and HIV/AIDS. Clinical and community-based prevention and screening will be analyzed to allow attendees to integrate the most effective procedures, methods and measurement for the treatment of medical issues.
Intended Audience
This conference is designed to benefit Aberdeen Area (South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa) clinical providers—including physicians, nurses, mental health counselors, substance abuse counselors, pharmacists, and dentists—as well as social workers, Tribal Health Directors and community members who provide services to Native Americans.

Continuing Education Hours
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Academic Conferences is granting 17.5 hours (1.75 CEUs) for this event. Approval for continuing education credit has been submitted to the following agencies. You may also need to apply for individual approval of this course for credit toward your continuing education. Hours awarded by these agencies vary. See below.
Physicians: The Indian Health Service (IHS) Clinical Support Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education for physicians and designates this continuing education activity for up to 17.25 hours of Category 1 credit toward the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit he or she actually spent in the educational activity. Physician Assistants: The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts this AMA Category 1 credit for physician assistants.
Nurses: The Indian Health Service (IHS) Clinical Support Center is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credential Center's Commission on Accreditation. This activity is designated for 17.25 contact hours for nurses.
Social Workers & Counselors (Mental Health/Substance Abuse/etc):
South Dakota: Alcohol and Drug Professionals: this event has been approved for 17.5 hours by the South Dakota Certification Board for Alcohol and Drug Professionals. Counselors: this event has been approved for 3.25 hours (1.25 hours May 29 for 1:15-2:30 p.m. Session IV Clinical track: Chronic Care Model for Beh. Health; and 2 hours on May 30 for the 1:00-2:00 p.m. and 2:00-3:00 p.m. General Sessions) by the South Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners (Approval #BCE0928). Social Workers-this event has been approved for 17.5 hours (1.75 CEUs) by the South Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners (Program #2529).
North Dakota: Counselors: this event has been approved for 3.9 hours (May 29: 1.5 hrs for either track of 1:15-2:30 p.m. Session IV: Behavioral Health; May 30: 1.2 hrs each for 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. General Sessions) by the North Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners. Social Workers: this event has been approved for 14.5 hours (all sessions except May 29 a.m.) by the North Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners (Approval #052808). Licensed Addiction Counselors - we have applied for pre-approval of this course with the North Dakota Board of Addiction Counselor Examiners.
Nebraska: Alcohol and Drug Counselors-we have applied for pre-approval of this event with the Nebraska Public Health Licensure Unit. Mental Health Practitioners (including Certified Marriage and Family Therapists; Certified Professional Counselors; Certified Master Social Workers; and Certified Social Workers)-this program meets the criteria of an approved continuing education program for mental health practice.
Iowa: Alcohol and Drug Counselors; Prevention Specialists; Assessment Specialists; Certified Gambling Treatment Counselors; Certified Criminal Justice Professionals; and Certified Co-occuring Disorders Professionals-this event is Iowa Board of Certification approved for 18.5 hours in Category A: Special Populations. Marriage and Family Therapists; Mental Health Counselors; Psychologists; and Social Workers-this event is intended to be integrally related to the practice of your profession and to be eligible for your continuing education. The Iowa Dept of Public Health Professional Licensing Bureau handles continuing education approval.
