The 2009 Annual Immigration/Emigration Summit will take place on June 16-17 on the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, East Campus, Hardin Hall. The 2009 Summit will address Immigration/Emigration Human Services and Social Issues.
The Summit is designed to engage educators, community leaders, senior political and university leaders, students, researchers, health professionals, educational administrators, policy makers, and others toward a dialogue on immigration and emigration. By uniting speakers and participants from diverse background, the summit is intended to strengthening collaboration among academics, communities, and leaders. The summit will raise awareness and address regional and national concerns regarding economic, educational, women, youth, housing, health, language, political representation, race relations, criminal justice, etc.
This bilingual Summit will begin an ongoing response on immigration/emigration and reframing and reorienting dialogues affecting the region, state, and global communities. Sessions will focus on such issues as human services, social stratification, existing systems, and promising best practices.
Among the eminent speakers scheduled for the summit are: Dr. V. Nelly Salgado de Snyder, Director of Community Health and Social Welfare of the Center for Health Systems Research of the Mexican National Institute of Public Health, Mr. Jorge Ernesto Espejel Montes, Mexican Consul, Darcy Tromanhauser, Director of Immigrant Integration and Civic Participation from the Appleseed Center and other prominent senior policy and educational leaders.

Keynote Speakers

Dr. V. Nelly Salgado de Snyder, Coordinator, Global Health Program National Institute of Public Health - Cuernavaca, Mexico. She is former director of Determinants and Challenges of the Health System at the Mexican National Institute of Public Health (INSP). She is a professor and researcher at the INSP where she leads the research line "Health and Vulnerable Groups"and coordinates the Global Health program. She has published over 100 journal articles, books and book chapters about social vulnerability and health, and has conducted research with groups such as undocumented immigrants, elderly, and those living in poverty. She is a member of the Mexican Academy of Scientific Research, a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, a Fulbright Fellow, and New Century Scholar by the Fulbright Program on Health in a Borderless World. Currently she is on sabbatical leave as a Balzan Fellow at the International Institute for Society and Health, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London.

Clarrisa Martinez De Castro. Director, Immigration and National Campaign, Clarrisa is involved in the oversight of work on immigration and efforts to expand opportunities for Latino engagement in civic life and public policy debates; board member, DEMOS; steering committee member, Rights Working Group. Immigration legislative advocacy and strategy, Latino electorate, voter mobilization, and participation; state advocacy efforts; coalition-building and management. Clarissa received her Master's degree, public administration, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; bacholer's degree, diplomacy and world affairs, Occidental College; Salzberg Seminar Fellow.
Previous Positions include: Manager of the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, a broad network of national, state, and local organizations committed to advancing policy solutions on immigration; NCLR Director of State/Local Public Policy, managing state policy advocacy efforts and civic engagement work; Public Policy Coordinator, Southwest Voter Research Institute (William C. Velasquez Institute); Assistant Director, California-Mexico Project at the University of Southern California; Organizer, Ladies' Garment Workers Union; Union Representative, Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) Local 11

The Annual Immigration/Emigration Summit will take place at the School of Natural Resources, East Campus, Hardin Hall., 3310 Holdrege Street, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska.
Conference Parking Information
CONFERENCE PARKING: Parking is provided with your registration. Parking will be permitted in designated lots near the conference. Those who are attending the conference and need a PARKING PERMIT for the conference must indicate on their registration. Please note that if you are not signed up for a PARKING PERMIT, you will not be allowed to park in the designated lot. PARKING IS LIMITED and will be based on first-come-first-serve so register early in order to guarantee a parking permit. Map coming soon.

We Offer Two Levels of Registration: General Public and Student.
General Public Registration
The General Public early registration fees for the Summit before CBD June 1, 2009 are $125.00. The General Public general registration fee the Summit, after CBD June 1, 2009, is $150.00. Walk-in registration for both days of the Summit is $150.00. Included in the registration fee are all morning and afternoon breaks, lunch on both days and Summit materials
Student Registration
The Student registration fee for the Summit is $35.00. Included in the registration fee are all morning and afternoon breaks, lunch on both days and Summit materials

If you plan to fly to get to the conference, the two nearest airports are located in Lincoln and Omaha, NE. If you arrive in Lincoln, you can use the Embassy Suites Hotel courtesy van service to get from the airport to the hotel. If you arrive in Omaha, you can reserve space on a shuttle that transports passengers from the Omaha airport to/from the Embassy Suites (and other Lincoln hotels). See the below links for more details. Car rental services are convenient at both airports. Lincoln is approximately a one-hour drive from Omaha.

Othmer Hall is the home of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, the Office of College Relations and the Dean's Office suite. It is located on the south side of Walter Scott Engineering Center, between 16th and 17th Streets along Vine Street. The Embassy Suites Hotel is located on the southeast corner of the UNL City Campus. The campus is less than one block northeast of the hotel. Othmer Hall is approximately 7 blocks (as the crow flies) northeast of the Embassy Suites. Othmer Hall is number 67 on the above map. The reception, Wednesday evening September 16, 2009 is planned to be in Othmer Hall. The meeting beginning September 17, 2009, and continuing through lunch on Friday, September 18, 2009, will be at the Embassy Suites Hotel.
