The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is proud to host The Nebraska Institute of Forensic Sciences Conference on Forensic Investigation and Management of Mass Disasters and the Medico-Legal Investigation of Child Abuse Cases. In this 3-day conference, attendees will learn the roles of Forensic Sciences, Medicine, and the Law in Mass Disaster Response - Serving Justice, Preserving evidence, and Saving Lives. Also presented will be the recent advances in the Forensic Investigations of Physical Child Abuse.
Who are some of the Experts?
Dr. Henry Lee - Dr. Lee has assisted law enforcement agencies worldwide with thousands of investigations, including high-profile cases such as the murder of Jon Benet Ramsey and the 1993 suicide of White House Counsel Vincent Foster. He also has testified as an expert witness in many investigations and court cases and testified in numerous high-profile cases, notably his consultation for the O. J. Simpson defense team
Dr. Michael Welner, M.D. - is one of America's most highly regarded forensic psychiatrists. He has pioneered several important advances in forensic science, consulted as lead examiner on some of the most critical and complex cases in America in recent years, has written groundbreaking pieces on cutting edge areas of forensic psychiatry and public policy, and has been recognized by various government, law, mental health, and news media organizations as a primary resource on emerging issues in forensic mental health.
Dr. Cyril H. Wecht, M.D., J.D. - Being an expert in Forensic Medicine, Dr. Wecht has frequently appeared on several nationally syndicated programs discussing various medico legal and forensic scientific issues, including medical malpractice, drug abuse, the assassinations of both President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, the death of Elvis Presley, the O.J. Simpson case, and the JonBenet Ramsey cases. His expertise has also been utilized in high profile cases involving Mary Jo Kopechne, Sunny von Bulow, Jean Harris, Dr. Jeffrey McDonald, the Waco Branch Davidian fire, and Vincent Foster. A
Dr. Frank Minyard, M.D. - Dr. Minyard has been coroner of the Parish of Orleans, Louisiana since his election to that position in 1974. He is qualified as an expert in forensic medicine and multiple other disciplines in the civil and criminal courts of Orleans and several surrounding parishes, as well as in forensic medicine in federal court. Dr. Minyard was involved intensively with hurricane Katrina.
Dr. John Filippi, D.D.S., A.B.F.O. - Dr. Filippi is a forensic dentist and dental consultant. Involved in mass disaster dental identification of airline disasters including the World Trade Center and hurricane Katrina.
Dr. Erin Kimmerle - Dr. Kimmerle served as Forensic Anthropologist in Kosovo and as the Chief Anthropologist in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina for the United Nations, International Criminal Tribunal.
Ms. Chizoma R. Opara, Esq. - Ms. Opara is a Staff Attorney with the American Bar Association, Abua, Nigeria an implementing partner for the Anti- Trafficking in Person project of US Agency for International Development. is responsible for conducting extensive legal research for various TIP projects, drafting and presenting case studies for education materials on human trafficking and child abuse and exploitation which is maintained and distributed to various law enforcement agencies.
Dr. Mark Perlin, M.D., Ph.D. - Dr. Perlin develops biomedical information and automation technologies. He has been working in the area of computational genetics for over 15 years. Dr. Perlin invented linear mixture analysis and deconvolution-based STR genotyping technologies for forensic DNA interpretation. Dr. Perlin also invented the inner product mapping method for rapidly building genome clone maps, and led the project that produced the first genome map for human chromosome 11. Currently, he is using TrueAllele computers to reanalyze the DNA data from the World Trade Center mass disaster.
Dr. Steven Matterman, Ph.D. - Dr. Matterman's areas of expertise include accident reconstruction, occupant kinematics, vehicle dynamics, biomechanics, mechanics of human injury, crash worthiness, restraint systems, products liability, safety engineering and human factors. Additional expertise is in mechanics of solids and structures, including stress analysis, buckling and stability, failure analysis, structural dynamics, impact, mechanical and structural design.

Oral Abstract Submission
The six selected Oral Presentations will be presented on November 2, 2007. From 1:45 pm to 5:45 pm. Please construct your presentation to fit within a 30 minute time period. Your presentation should consist of a 15-minute presentation plus 5 minutes for audience questions

Poster Board Abstract Submission
The Poster Boards presentation will be throughout the conference. Twelve poster boards will be selected each day.
Please note that you must register for the conference before submitting a Poster Board abstract. Your registration will be verified before your abstract submission will be considered. Abstracts submitted without a corresponding registration will be dropped from the program.
The Registration Deadline for those who have submitting Poster Board abstracts is September 21, 2007. Authors will be notified as to whether or not their abstracts have been accepted after October 1, 2007.We encourage you to submit early as we have limited space.
The poster presentation consists of the use of visual aids, and should take up a space no larger than 2 ft x 3 ft. They will be mounted by pins on a poster board which will be provided. The poster presentations will be presented in an informal setting that allows presenters to discuss their research with individual attendees. Posters/exhibits should be self-explanatory and readable within about five minutes. Your poster should be readable from 3 feet away.

Pending approval, Continuing Education Units (CEU) will be provided. For your convenience, all certificate programs participants will receive a completion letter /certificate. Verification of Attendance will be in form of sign-in for each day and is required to receive CEU receipt of a completion letter. Many national, state, and local licensing boards and professional organizations will grant Continuing Education credit for attendance at our certificate programs when you submit the course outline (save your class hand outs) and your completion letter. You may want to contact your own board or organization to find out what is required.

CONFERENCE PARKING: Parking will be permitted in designated lots near the conference. Those who are attending the conference and need a PARKING PERMIT for the conference must indicate on their registration or email: conferences@unl.edu. Lincoln is easily accessible by air, rail, or automobile. Interstate 80 stretching from coast to coast traces its path right along the Lincoln city limits. This east-west accessibility is complemented by ease of access from the north or south via U.S. Highway 77 or Interstate 29 by way of Nebraska Highway 2.
