Program Description

The central focus of the 2008 conference is to bring people together to develop innovative techniques that will positively impact the behavioral health of American Indian/Alaska Natives using telehealth and related emerging practices.

Conference Objectives and skills to be gained
This conference is designed to provide new skills, resources, techniques, methodologies and resources for treating the causes and effects of issues such as substance abuse and dependence; family and generational issues; domestic violence; culture challenges; use of psychopharmacology; post-traumatic stress; and crisis response. The information shared will cover clinical practice; evaluation of existing practices; non-traditional and emerging techniques; and the use of new technologies in the field of mental and behavioral health. A special emphasis will be placed on native cultures and communities.

This conference is designed for mental health, behavioral health, substance abuse and psychology professionals. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Academic Conferences is granting 17 clock hours (1.7 CEUs) for attendance at the whole conference. You will each receive a certificate of attendance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln signifying our approved hours and CEUs. Approval for continuing education credit has been submitted to the following agencies. You may also need to apply for individual approval of this course for credit toward your continuing education. Marriage and Family Therapists: this event has been approved for 17 hours by the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy (CE#3482). Psychologists: this event has been approved for 17 hours (6 on May 28; 6 on May 29; and 5 on May 30) by the Minnesota Board of Psychology (Board log #0804-8079). Social Workers: the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is an approved Continuing Education Provider by the Minnesota Board of Social Work (Provider #CEP-383) and this event is designated for 17 CE hours.

Wisconsin
Substance Abuse Counselors; Clinical Substance Abuse Counselors; Professional Counselors; Marriage and Family Therapists; Prevention Specialists; Psychologists; and Social Workers: this course is intended to meet Wisconsin standards set forth in the administrative code for these professions.

Iowa
Alcohol and Drug Counselors; Prevention Specialists; Assessment Specialists; Certified Gambling Treatment Counselors; Certified Criminal Justice Professionals; and Certified Co-occuring Disorders Professionals: this event is Iowa Board of Certification approved for 19.25 hours in Category A. Individual sessions are approved for various content subcategories. Please request an Iowa CEU detail sheet during the conference. Marriage and Family Therapists; Mental Health Counselors; Psychologists; and Social Workers: this event is intended to be integrally related to the practice of your profession and to be eligible for your continuing education. The Iowa Dept of Public Health Professional Licensing Bureau handles continuing education approval.

North Dakota
Counselors: the North Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners has approved this event for 17 hours for counselors; 11 of the hours are clinical in content for LPCCs (workshop sessions I through V and the 8:30 a.m. general sessions on April 23 and 24). Licensed Addition Counselors: this event has been approved for 17 contact hours by the North Dakota Board of Addiction Counselor Examiners (Program #AC42220008). Psychologists: this event is approved for 17 CE credits (5.75 on April 22; 6.75 on April 23; and 4.5 on April 24) by the North Dakota State Board of Psychologist Examiners. Social Workers: this event has been approved for 15.5 hours by the North Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners (Approval #042308).

South Dakota
Alcohol and Drug Professionals: this event has been approved for 18.75 hours by the South Dakota Certification Board for Alcohol and Drug Professionals. Counselors: this event has been approved for 16.75 hours (5.75 on May 28; 6 on May 29; and 5 on May 30) by the South Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners (Approval #BCE0922). Psychologists: this event can be listed in the continuing education section of your renewal application. Social Workers: per the South Dakota Dept of Human Services Professional Licensing this event is approved for your continuing education based on the approval of the Minnesota board of Social Work.

Nebraska
Mental Health Practitioners (including Certified Marriage and Family Therapists; Certified Professional Counselors; Certified Master Social Workers; and Certified Social Workers): this program meets the criteria of an approved continuing education program for mental health practice. Presenter Information

This conference will feature a wide range of noted experts and innovators in the fields of behavioral and mental health. Please see the agenda for a complete speaker list. Among the speakers are
José A Rivera, J.D.—former law professor, now a noted speaker and national project director for an HRSA domestic violence training and technical assistance project.
Clayton Small, Ph.D.—a former director of the Indian Health Service, Small is a dynamic trainer in the American Indian wellness movement.
Saul Selby, M.A., LADC—national speaker, trainer and author in mental health and addiction counseling techniques.
LCDR Michael R. Tilus, USPHS—director of social services and mental health programs for Spirit Lake Health Center, Tilus is an expert in dialectical behavioral therapy and psychopharmacology.
MariJo Moore—an award-winning author and lecturer on issues facing indigenous peoples.
Linda Silvas—an international public speaker with a powerful presentation covering substance abuse and the fragmentation of the family circle.

Standing Rock Tribal Diabetes Program

The Standing Rock Tribal Diabetes Program will be offering incentive prizes for those of you participating in their scheduled activities. These events include basic assessment (BMI, glucose testing, and blood pressure); exercise and stretching; and if the weather permits, will include morning walks around the area. Prizes include water bottles, T-Shirts, pedometers and more.


Registration Information

Federal Employees: registration fee will be waived. The 3-day registration will include attendance to all 3 days programs, breaks, and conference t-shirt and tote bag. Federal Employees will need to purchase the April 23 banquet tickets separately. The ticket price is $20.00. This can be done online and payment can be made at the conference. Full Conference Registration for all other attendees, Private and Professional: The 3-day registration fee will include attendance to all 3 days programs, breaks, conference tote bag, and banquet ticket. Full 3-day registration fee - $229

Single-Day Registration fees for all other attendees, Private and Professional:  The 1-day registration fee will include attendance to all that days programs, breaks and conference tote bag. Banquet tickets can be purchased during registration. Single-Day Registration Fee - $129
