AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas head track and field/cross country coach Bev Kearney is being recognized at the 21st Annual Great Sports Legend Dinner. The event benefits The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis and will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

The ceremony takes place in the Grand Ballroom at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City beginning at 5:30 p.m. (Eastern) with a silent auction, prior to the 7:30 p.m. (Eastern) dinner and ceremony.

As one of the 2006 Sports Legends, Kearney will also have a memorable morning. She will be at the American Stock Exchange and will have the opportunity to ring the ceremonial bell to open the daily exchange at 9:30 a.m. (Eastern).

The fundraising dinner is a tribute to sporting legends from different athletic categories and unites individuals from the world of sports, business and entertainment every year. Entering the 2006-07 season, Kearney begins her 15th year at the helm of the UT women's track and field program. Kearney has also been named the top women's track coach in the conference 15 times and lauded as the best district coach on 10 occasions.

"I was overwhelmed when I found out about this great recognition," said Kearney, when asked about her reaction to the news. "I was in shock because I have been blessed to have received numerous honors in my career, and each and every one of them is special and surprising."

Legendary alumni of the event include Michael Jordan, Dan Marino, Muhammad Ali, Mario Andretti, Joe DiMaggio, Wayne Gretzky, Jack Nicklaus, Chris Evert, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Charles Barkley.

Jonathan Sprinkles

Jonathan Sprinkles is the 2006 College Speaker of the Year selected by members of the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities and here's why: he's funny; his energy keeps audiences on the edge of their seats; and he pulls no punches. Jonathan has quickly become recognized as one of the most sought-after and well-respected speakers and entrepreneurs in the country. The author of several books, informational audio projects and countless articles, his writings have been published internationally and are frequently cited by industry experts.

Jonathan's passion to help people perform at their best stems from the agony that he felt when he lost his father to cancer at the age of 15. Attempting to mask the pain, he gave into peer pressure and the low expectations that surround many African-American men. However, Jonathan's spirit wouldn't allow him to stay down. Refusing to settle for life's second best, he graduated college from the fourth-ranked marketing program in the country and enjoyed a thriving career in sales at Dell, Inc. Jonathan also distinguished himself as being among the top speakers, becoming a Toastmasters International District Champion in speech evaluation (one of only 73 in the world).

Jonathan was hand-picked by senior management to join an elite group of Senior Account Managers who were responsible for acquiring new business in the fastest-growing segment of the company. Because of the leadership, customer service, and team-building skills that he developed within a high-stakes sales environment era, Jonathan was bestowed with the coveted title as the "Significant Achiever" among a pool of 400 of the corporation's best sales reps.

After just a few minutes with Jonathan, his quick wit and down-home style of "teaching beautiful people to act like it," will make you feel like you've known him your entire life. He inspires corporations, association members and students to aim high and reject excuses. Jonathan Sprinkles' life is one that we can all celebrate as proof that you don't have to come from a great background to live a great life.
